Geotechnical Testing in Soils and Geosynthetics

Mullenburst.jpg

I currently work at Advanced Terra Testing in Lakewood, CO where I

  • Test soils for index, material and chemical properties using ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) methods

  • Test geosynthetics for index and strength properties using ASTM methods

  • Facilitate mix design testing to solidify soils

  • WAQTC Certified

The test pictured is on a woven geotextile to determine bursting strength of the material. While all this is some distance from my initial background in mineral physics, I enjoy employing many of the scientific design techniques I learned during my PhD to the more practical application of geotechnical engineering.

If you’re wondering more about what we do, it’s the laboratory testing side of geotechnical engineering, which is a facet of civil engineering. Turns out geology is a lot more than simply studying rocks and the Earth’s interior. The practical application of geology explains why every road project takes forever and why the soil under your foundation really, really matters.
